What is the number one piece of information that I wish I’d known back when I started on eBay that would’ve, you know, helped the business grow even faster? Well, I spent a lot of time thinking about this, and it’s not one secret. There’s eight secrets, and they all compound each other. They all feed off each other, and the last secret is like throwing jet fuel on a fire.

So let’s launch straight into it. The first secret to drop shipping on eBay is to use a proven methodology. It doesn’t have to be my methodology. Don’t get me wrong; this is not a plug for my drop shipping course. It does not matter which methodology that you use. It just needs to be a proven methodology, and preferably one with case studies. It’s like making a chocolate cake. If you guess the ingredients, then you get an unproven result.

One of the greatest things that I learnt from Tony was to not waste your life continually reinventing the wheel.

He just knows how to make that chocolate cake from scratch. He’s been doing it all his life, and you ask him if you can be with him while he makes the next lot of chocolate cakes, and he agrees.

While Pierre is making the chocolate cake, you stop him at every stage and measure each ingredient precisely before he puts it into the mixing bowl. You measure exactly how much flour, how much butter, how much sugar, how much chocolate, the make of chocolate, et cetera, and you also accurately document the temperature of the oven, exactly how long the chocolate cake is baked.

And now bingo, you have the recipe for the world’s best chocolate cake, and you and anyone else can duplicate that recipe over and over again. Building an eBay drop ship business is just like making a chocolate cake. It’s just a matter of following a step-by-step, duplicatable, proven recipe, just like how you make a chocolate cake. Again, this is the reason I talk so much about case studies from my students.

Now, the reason this is so important is it means that what is working is the recipe and not the chef. Why not just find a proven chocolate cake recipe so you can quickly get a proven result? As I get older, I closely monitor what I enjoy doing the most in life and also figure out what I enjoy doing the least. By figuring this out, I continually get rid of what I enjoy doing the least, which gives me more time to do the things in life that I love doing the most.
As an example
As an example, when we first purchased this farm we live on, I used to enjoy cutting firewood. I used to enjoy getting the chainsaw out, the splitter out, et cetera, and creating firewood. For the first year, that was fun. However, you know, like many things in life, it quickly got old, and it started to lose its appeal. So these days, I have a truck on speed dial who delivers a truckload of timber in one phone call. In one phone call, the timber is cut, split, and stacked.
What used to take me days of work now
What used to take me days of work now takes me around one minute per year. Getting rid of a task like this gives me a load more time to do other things in life that I enjoy doing more, like, you know, spending time with my kids. Because time is so precious, I do my best these days to not ever waste my time reinventing the wheel.
Simply find somebody who is already getting the result
Whatever the task, whether it’s building an eBay drop shipping business or learning to make a chocolate cake, don’t waste your precious time reinventing the wheel, then getting an unknown result. Simply find somebody who is already getting the result, and duplicate exactly what they’re doing so you can get the same predictable result over and over.
When you think about it?
After all, when you think about it, isn’t that why we went to school and read books, so we don’t have to spend our whole lives trying to figure out what somebody’s already figured out for us? Why try to reinvent how to boil water when somebody’s, you know, already figured it out for you? Stay tuned till next week.
