Wow! Loved this advice – it really resonated with me. Unfortunately I have spent all my money so am finding it difficult to outsource right now. However, listening to this advice I have made a decision – focus on saving enough to outsource and stop worrying on a minute by minute basis about trying to learn how to do it all myself. Thanks Neil – this little chat from you has saved my sanity!!
Hi Neil – Good video and some good advice. The book The E-Myth by Michael Gerber is a good read on this subject.
Yes you can’t help feeling for the two kids you refer to in the video. They will probably be forced to work for some ho-hum software company for peanuts. Probably end up working their guts out for those peanuts and be forced to accept shares or stock options to make up the balance of their salary.
Then to top it all off – the company will probably list on the ASX or the New York Stock Exchange and they will be become instant multi-millionaires or even billionaires – ah la Atlassan, Facebook, Apple Microsoft etc etc.
Kind of brings a tear to your eye doesn’t it. I should know – I am fighting them back as I type. But I am battling on.
So it begs the question doesn’t it. Why do these big companies such as Facebook, Apple etc continue to build these magnificient campuses to house their increasing work force. Gym’s, quiet rooms, free restaurants etc. Haven’t they heard about your secret of using cheap labour from oversears countries. What’s wrong with them.
Well one of many reasons could possibly be the protection of interlectual property or cyber security or a bit of both. The philososphy probably goes a bit like this. Why hand this over on a plate to possible/potential hackers through subbies, particulary in developing countries – where law enforcement can be lax. All the while spending millions of dollars to protect computer systems from ip theft, money theft, id theft, credit card theft and cyber blackmail (to name a few).
Anyway that is a another story for some other time. I am still thinking about those two poor kids and my eyes are starting to water so much I am having difficulty in seeing the screen.
As the French say – au revoir
Great suggestion Neil on outsourcing. I tell clients all the time not to build yourself a job but to build yourself a business.
